Apple Day 2009
This year at the Millennium Orchard we celebrated our 10th anniversary.
The 10th anniversary event was a huge success with around 2000 people attending on a lovely sunny day.
Everyone was busy, especially the new refreshment areas. The site looked neat and tidy thanks to the hard work of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council countryside access officers. It was a joy to see families enjoying a traditional day out.
The WI scarecrow competition was very popular with young and old alike - a feature we must repeat in years to come.
Cakes and preserves always sell out early, and this year bags of apples and apple trees sold out too.
A good representation of country crafts provided entertainment and interest for all visitors with favourable comments being received from visitors and participants.
Grace Mulligan, our special guest, unveiled our new apple sculpture and had kind words to say about our venture.
New trees are being planted next season to replace ones which have failed. New fencing has improved the entrance to the orchard, and new wooden sculptures have been added along the foorpath.
These are just some of the small additions helping to improve this joint millennium project between the WI and East Riding of Yorkshire Council. This is a great partnership which we hope will still be providing enjoyment for the coimmunity in the next millenium.
What one of our visitors had to say...
"Thought I'd send this photo of my Family enjoying this year's Apple Day at the the Millennium Orchard. It's my Husband Gavin with our Grandaughter, Lila on his back with his two daughter's Amy and Jennifer posing with one of the superb scarecrows.
We really enjoyed the day and came home with a jar of local honey and some chutney. Amy had her photo taken with one of the birds of prey.
We were very impressed with the orchard and plan to visit again very soon, only when it is less hectic so we can enjoy the rural ambience to ourselves.
Thanks to the organisers for a lovely day."
